Case and point.
Maybe keep Corey Marshal.
Apparently they basically did single takes for a lot of the dialogue because there was so much of it, and for some parts they got him to record certain words on their own so they could splice sentences together.
Point still stands that there was some seriously shitty translation going on.

But I thought Corey was the most lifeless of the lot! Keep everyone else, but I'm not so sure about him.

Yes, I am sure they could find someone better to voice Ryo. How hard is it to get decent voice actors. Naughty Dog owns the VO market with their games!

Yeah, but to be fair to Corey it's not that he sounded unprofessional, it's just that he sounded like he had practised for a long time to make his voice sound so flat and monotone.

I think it was because of what Chris said. Everything was recorded at random so he didnt get too excited for anything not knowing the context. It would've been much better had he guessed, or just went full on Brian Blessed and got excited for everything. TOY CAPSUUUULLLES!

I think we should all get together in real life sometime and play Shenmue (and shag).

Good idea. We'll move into Pat's house for a while. As long as Pat is away stalking Gary Numan

Ryo had a real fucking mean streak in Shenmue. I mean, sure he was fighting people who rightly deserved to have their head kicked in, but he borderline tortures one of the sailors when he puts him in an arm lock.
It sort of melts away a little bit in Shenmue II though. He's still a hothead but he doesn't cross the line that much.
Character development! Shame the English and Japanese VAs are so wooden, Ryo is actually one of the more fleshed out characters in video game history.

Shame the English and Japanese VAs are so wooden, Ryo is actually one of the more fleshed out characters in video game history. I've always thought the same thing. Despite being a total slab of manboy in Shenmue, it's interesting that Ryo has absolutely no qualms about cracking heads and bringing the pain, when he wants to. He definitely comes across as being a generally nice and good hearted guy, but with a slightly cocky mean streak in him when it comes to fighting. But I think that suits his character, as he's the teenage son of a (recently murdered) Martial arts master, growing up in a new westernised Japan. It is a shame about the voice acting, but if anything I think Corey's strangely monotone performance actually makes Ryo come across as slightly psychotic. I think Ryo does mature in Shenmue 2 (Shenmue's almost a coming of age story, really). He starts to lose that cocky edge because he keeps on getting battered and schooled by superior martial artists.

Yeh but near the end of Disc 3 he beats 2 very tough guys, Master Bailu & Don Niu, that must have added to his ego luckily he has a whole chapter to calm down after those 2 fights in Guilin would love to know whats in Chapter 7. YS should release a few teasers from the script or something, but its quite obvious in his interviews that he doesent seem to want to let barely any information out about the rest of the story, he doesent give much away when asked questions about it!
