Thanks to the forum staff for moving the Team Yu thread into the Shenmue III section. As mue26 said (erm, a while ago), let's keep the discussion in that thread now.

That was quick! Are they clips from existing videos, and if so did you get permission to use them all?

I wouldn't hold my breath for many contributions of that sort. I would maybe do it if I had a half-decent method of filming myself, but I think most people will be a little camera shy. Perhaps you could search YouTube for similar videos and ask the uploaders for permission to include relevant, on-message clips from their videos within yours? And if they were passionate enough to make those vids then they may also be interested in getting further involved with the campaign.

It's hard to say whether Yu intends to totally buy the licence off Sega or just kind do what he kind of did with Gai, whereby his team developed it but Sega still acted as some sort of publisher. What's your opinion? I'll ask him next time we squad up on Call of Duty.

That sounds amazing. And heartwarmingly sweet as well. If that didn't appeal to Sega's Japanese sensibilities then it just goes to show what a waste of time it is for people to continue begging them to make the game themselves. Releasing the license to Yu Suzuki is the only option worth pursuing, and clearly has been for some time.

Wars the name of the Play guy Ryan, but let's not pester him. I don't even know about this capsule toy campaign, what was that?

Spreading the word and gathering support through other websites and forums is definitely worth doing. I've done a little bit of that - obviously, as it's how I ended up here via mue26 - but I'm just not familiar with that many sites. If I had the time I'd put more effort into that kind of outreach and publicity.
I "DM'd" the Play editor on Twitter today enquiring about the possibility of a short article in a future issue of his magazine, promoting the idea of Suzuki obtaining the license and being funded by Sony for PS3 exclusivity, but he hasn't replied. I didn't expect him to, but figured there was no harm in asking after he got involved in the dispute with Sega last night.

I agree with mue that being proactive is essential for anything to happen. I'm not sure however that personally assaulting Sega by email can achieve anything. An email every now and then, sure, but repeated emails from the same person - or the same people, however many there are - will be too easy to ignore. They'll end up getting filtered into a spam folder and no one will ever know. The benefit of forums and Twitter and Facebook is that the message is public, so when you're addressing Sega in a post/tweet/status you're doing so in front of others and hopefully inspiring them to join in and follow suit. That way every new message serves a unique purpose as it could catch the eye of someone new, even though Sega's heard it all from you before. I hope to put a campaign video together as well, but I'm still a n00b with audio and video editing software so I can't even hazard a guess as to when it'll be finished. It looks awesome in my head... if only I could copy and paste that onto the computer.

Should the Team Yu thread perhaps be moved in here to the Shenmue III subforum? If I was a first time visitor to Shenmue UK, interested in what's going on with S3, I probably wouldn't head straight for the forum's news/introduction section where it's mostly stuff about the website and its members. Newcomers probably don't go in there until they've decided they're sticking around.

A user called OldMario asked them "where can i send requests for more HD games, would love space channel 5, sonic adventure 2 and JET SET RADIO" and they replied "feel free to tweet us or post on our forums - forums.sega.com. A few topics on our forums already." So unless they're just passing the buck it might be worth hitting the forums as well, although it may be harder to sustain the push on there without annoying other (non-Shenmue) fans. It's not the paid job of Super Monkey Ball fans to put up with people like us.

Excellent video, johnnybravoboy. Just one little change I'd recommend: change the hashtag to show the American spelling of license. If you let me know when that's done I'll help promote the video.
The stuff with Sega on Twitter last night became quite amusing when more people got involved, including the editor of Play magazine. To be fair to the staff behind Sega's Twitter account, I can understand them getting frustrated with the constant mentions of Shenmue 3, but they're surely trained not to vent that frustration on official channels. They are the public interface between fans and the company, so it's their job to take in what people are saying without throwing their hands up and basically saying "we can't magic the game outta thin air, we're just the Twitter guys!"

A little exchange following on from the above:
Team Yu: Another classy reply, Sega.
Sega: no disrespect, but we aren't in a position to announce any products. You tweet at us every day demanding this.
Fan desires have been acknowledged, should any new info pop up on your fav game (or someone elses), it'll be on SEGA.com
Team Yu: What kind of tweets are allowed? If fans can't express their wishes to you, then a) Who should it be? and b) Why are you on Twitter?
Sega: oh, everything is allowed, just tempering your expectations
I'm informing you on what we can / cannot say because it sounds like you think we do something else :).
Team Yu: Everyone understands it's not your place to announce games on request. We just hope it is your place to pass feedback up the chain.
Sega: I think it's pretty established among fans and media that folks are interested in the series. No need to tweet 24/7 the same stuff
create sites, celebrate the game and series, get people involved - all good things. Demanding / spamming? Not so much :).

Sega today was already p*ssed off with 500k making a sarcastic reply and rather than cowering, we do so more. For those who missed it: twitter.com/#!/SEGA/status/170601668168253440 Shenmue500K's tweet to Sega: "Please can we all have some positive news on the #Shenmue series this year?" Sega's response: "You do realize that anyone on our community team can't announce products or see into the future. Right?"

I hear what you're saying, and agree with you about vocal activity being more important than waiting for a specific number of members. It's easy for someone to click "Like" or "Follow" and then forget about it. People do it all the time for the most inane things. But if they actually post statuses and tweets in support of the campaign then it shows that it's something they really care about.
I also think it's good for different campaigns to present a united front. I must admit when I launched Team Yu I was concerned that the organisers of Shenmue500K might get a little territorial, as that's how things tend to go on the Internet. I wasn't sure they'd recognise the difference in my approach, that it wasn't just a selfish "me too" exercise. But right from the beginning they have been very supportive and even seem to have tailored their campaign more towards the issue of Sega letting Suzuki have the license. The #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense hashtag was first used by them, and I've adopted it as it suits Team Yu's message. They also started a petition calling for the same thing. So we appear to be very much on the same wavelength right now, although I think they'll continue spreading their attention across all things Shenmue (including continuing to ask Sega to make Shenmue 3 themselves, and to release HD updates of the first two games) while Team Yu focuses purely on the licensing issue.
When it comes to combining the membership totals, you have to bear in mind that there'll be a certain amount of overlap. Even within Team Yu, several of those Facebook fans are also Twitter followers, and several of those Twitter followers are followers of Shenmue500K. It's difficult to know what assumptions Sega would make about that - they might imply that all the smaller campaigns are comprised of supporters who are already part of the largest, making that one the only number that counts.
That's why having multiple campaigns can be a bit of a hindrence, as it dilutes the audience, which might be hypocritical of me to say but I feel strongly that the licensing issue should be concentrated on. If the day were to come that Shenmue500K committed all their energy to the same goal as Team Yu, then I'd be happy to just join their campaign rather than running a separate one with the same purpose.

There isn't a set target - do you think there should be? I'm really just playing it by ear on that front, kind of expecting to "feel" when there's enough galvanised support to make an impressive statement. But very open to suggestions. If you haven't seen the Team Yu thread in the site news section, I've described in there how the mid-term plan is to collect a load of other people's tweets in support of our aim and retweet them en masse to Sega, in the hope that it makes more impact than the preceding drip feed. Actually getting the hashtag to trend is a more lofty goal. Presenting results to Suzuki-san is less of a priority, as it seems to be Sega that needs the most convincing, but we'll see how things go. If the Facebook and Twitter pages gain enough fans/followers then the numbers may be reassuring to him, but I'd rather have 200 vocal supporters of Team Yu than 2000 silent members.

Everything I'd have said has been summarised well by others, but here are a couple of recent posts on the Team Yu Facebook page that JoePesciAddict mentioned: Shenmue 3 and KickstarterThe cost of Shenmue 3I hope the links work, I've had to adapt them from the mobile version of the site.
