I recently read an article published about two days ago regarding Shenmue 3. I have supplied the link here: www.computerandvideogames.com/335480/features/should-sega-kickstarter-shenmue-3/ Basically, in this recently published article people are saying that we can fund games that we want to see if we decide to do so. Many games have employed this technique where they get the fans to fundraise and then donate the amount to the developer. Think about it - there may be a minimum of 4,000,000 fans on Shenmue pages on Twitter alone who are English/Japanese/European collectively. If we could get all of them to donte £1 to a secure PayPal set up donation page for Shenmue 3, that would be £4,000,000 within a fairly short space of time. I think World of Warcraft is mentioned in the article; that the creator put the deveopment costs to a fan doantion system. He requested $400,000 as a baseline and instead got $1,000,000 in one day across the globe. I feel this would be a really good idea to help Yu Suzuki with the funding of making Shenmue 3. I dont know about you, but in terms of Yu Suzuki's new company YS NET, his first project was Shenmue Town. His website is fashioned solely on Shenmue and with the Shenmue Master interviews recently, we learn pretty much that Yu Suzuki would love to make the game, its just a question of budget. If we could fundraise a solid amount and donate to Yu Suzuk to pay for Shenmue 3 deveopment costs I think that act will show Yu Suzuki that the sequel is of paramount interest and must be made. Funny thing is I wrote a very formal letter to Yu Suzuki's company in Japan, making copies in both English and Japanese. I have also written to Shenmue Master the French fan base but in both cases this was two days ago and I have had no response. It might be too early we shall see, or maybe I look too untrustworthy as a single person trying to fundraise such a large sum of a donation. The fact that this method has been done before and the article specificaly encourages Shenmue fans to take action, I am merely following up on the idea presented by the article and I believe with enough promotion, we could fundraise at least £500,000 or so in a week or even a day you never know. I would really like to do this and I have seen forums on Shenmue sights of fans saying similar things. If we could perhaps set up a donation page to cater for Shenmue 3 development costs this could very well kickstart Shenmue 3 development. What do you think? Could this be done? I would like to be involved in whatever decision is made. We as a collective body just might be able to fund Shenmue 3's development if done so. But we would have to do it through a website to make us look 'official' to Yu Suzuki if you get my drift, rather than just a 20 year old down a backstreet alley in Canning Town, if we could get a large team of supporters perhaps? sorry this post a bit longgggggg zzzzzzz

I am not sure of the legal implications these actions, but I think it is a good idea. You mentioned WOW but in that instance the owner was raising the money himself. How can we be allowed to raise money for a project that isn't owned by us. I am sure that it has to be illegal, and SEGA won't do it themselves because it is beneath them as a company as letsgetsweaty has pointed out on his Team Yu Facebook page. I think Kickstarter would definitely work to raise money for Shenmue, but SEGA needs to buy in or at least hand the license over to Yu Suzuki.
They'd rather leave it in development hell, because, they don't want to risk failure and they don't want to risk backlash from a the Shenmue fan base if it is successful. With how long they have waited to make the game I think that they are hoping for the community to slowly die out, but with the rise of twitter and other social media sites, it might just be hard to kill us.
If Yu can acquire the rights, I think he'd make it as soon as possible, but he would probably have to pay SEGA a large sum of money. Then he'd have to put a lot of money and resources and time into the making of Shenmue III and bank on it being successful, otherwise, he might go bankrupt. It's a very complex financial situation. And I also think that SEGA won't declare it cancelled, not because they hope to make it, but to keep it away from Yu so that they don't have to worry about its success or failure. At this point it would reflect poorly on SEGA either way.

How much did Shenmue II cost anyway? People seem to see the huge numbers involved with the original and believe that a similar number would need to be raised, but you'd have to assume that if they made the game to 10 year old standards (probably something I'd prefer personally to keep the 3 titles as similar as possible, barring the highly unlikely scenario off everything getting remade) that the number of people upset by that would be few, the cost relatively low at this stage and the chance of profit pretty decent

Tsk I see your point now and there I was amazingly proud at my awesome idea = epic fail lool. So Yu has to obtain those bloody rights before any of this funding shizzle can be looked into? I wonder exactly if he will ever plan on that and follow up on his words. I hope all this talk "I want to make it/ I can acquire the IP from sega" isn't just bluffing. He should just say NO if he doesn't want to do it not give ppl false hope. Or maybe there is the chance he could mean what he says. I hope with his new very much Shenmue obsessed YS Net the "means to work on things he loves" Shenmue Gai being the first project is an indication that Shenmue is of interest to him. Is there anything we can do to ahem politely encourage Suzuki to obtain this IP? Not much is there?

For any of you who haven't seen it go onto YS NET it's a Japanese site. There you will find ALL his posts are Shenmue Shenmue Shenmue. The design is Shenmue. And it's his own "personal company to do stuff he really loves" maybe Shenmue Gai was a soft hello but now he will crack on soon with beginning development with Shenmue 3....I hope. And yes I am replying to myself, because I just stumbled across a second hand Dreamcast with S 1 and S2 and it's not fairrrrrr!!!!! Lool :b

Everything I'd have said has been summarised well by others, but here are a couple of recent posts on the Team Yu Facebook page that JoePesciAddict mentioned: Shenmue 3 and KickstarterThe cost of Shenmue 3I hope the links work, I've had to adapt them from the mobile version of the site.

Lool :b I think that he would have pushed forward with some sort of production if he actually had the rights. As of right now he doesn't really have any more power than us. Shenmue Gai should be looked at as almost a fan game since it has nothing to do with SEGA and it is not even a real 3 dimensional adventure game. I don't understand production logic. I can't believe so many resources were wasted on Shenmue Online...

Ok that's explained pretty well. Grrrr come on Sega! Hand over that ruddy IP. I hope Yu will do as he says and obtain it rather than simply just saying it. The sooner he does the better. Oh but who am I kidding he said at the conference documented by Shenmue master that his next project is ninja cats and dogs game. Another ten years waiting? I think sooooooooooo :@
