No harm in trying.
I remember emailing Sega years ago asking if there was any truth to rumours they were working on a new console called the Dural. They replied advising no, they were not working on a new console called the Dural...
Technically they weren't lying, the sly gits. (Project Dural became the Dreamcast.)

I've been toying with the idea of setting up a proper website now that Facebook have fucked the layout of pages with their horrible "timeline" design. So downloadable flyers would be a great addition to that.
As far as letter writing goes, I really believe Sega's staff (at the level who'd be opening and reading those letters) don't give a shit what Shenmue fans want, and would totally disregard them no matter how many there were (which realistically wouldn't be many, given the practical effort involved). The benefit of the Tweetathon is that it's a public shaming of the company's image, and that's what we're hoping Sega can't ignore. Letters and emails can be swept under the rug, but tweets are out there in the public eye.

Good old fashioned promoting eh? As long as it doesn't cost you much then give it a try and let us know how it goes. If stores are willing to help in this way then it could be effective - I know if I was in GameStation and saw Ryo Hazuki staring up at me from a leaflet on the counter, I'd be giving it my full attention. Let me know if you need help designing the flyer.
About there being a lot of Portuguese fans, it's funny that a couple of them are pointing out the same thing on Shenmue 500K right now. Can you speak Portuguese Johnny? If so, how would you translate the following into natural speech?
"If you want to see Shenmue 3, ask Sega to give the Shenmue license to Yu Suzuki."

A tweet to Japanese fans is harder, as I haven't been able to nail down a convincing translation. It's easy to type something into Google Translate or FreeTranslation.com and hit the button to convert it from English to Japanese, but those things aren't perfect and you don't know how reliable the translation is until you then try converting it back from Japanese into English. If you end up with something along the same lines as your original message, great - but so far all my efforts have come back with nonsense. There's a Japanese tweet directly to Sega on this page though, asking them to give Yu the Shenmue license.

Here are some translated tweets I used to reply with when I saw foreign language users mentioning Shenmue: Spanish:¿Quiere ver Shenmue 3? Bitten Sie Sega, Yu Suzuki die Shenmue Erlaubnis zu geben! youtu.be/NfIQHBb4tLQ #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense (The last one uses a different video link because the other video's blocked in Germany.) This tactic fell by the wayside when I got suspended for sending so many replies, but if you want to send the odd one or two then it has proven to work in getting international followers to the campaign. Just not very many yet.

Fur Fighters? Never even heard of it. Though I suppose some would say the same about Shenmue, so maybe there's an underground global Fur Fighters community rejoicing at this overdue update...
I think we ought to keep focusing our campaign on Sega as I don't believe YS Net need to be convinced. Given the opportunity I think they'd be all over Shenmue 3 like a cheap suit.
(...I was going to say "like white on rice" but then realised how racist that sounded...)

The score on GC comments is deceiving. If you're logged in, then your vote counts as 3! So a rating of 10 can just mean that three registered users and one guest voted up. Which I'm still pleased with, but not as impressive as ten individual votes.
Not that a negative score really matters, because the video's still out there and there's every chance that someone's still seen it and been encouraged to participate, whether they clicked thumbs up on the forum or not.

GC must simply be a more positive community than most, because I thought I was being cheeky posting this in response to a letter bemoaning the wait for Half-Life 3.

Many happy returns, JoePesciAddict!
No, I'm not saying you ought to be happy. No, I didn't mean you have to smile, and I'm definitely not saying you're like some kind of clown. Look, I didn't mean to imply that you're just here to amuse me. Really.
Just, happy birthday, okay?
Please put the gun down, I feel like I've shot myself in the foot already.

Indeed he did, on May 3rd. I didn't know at the time who he was. I've now gone looking for his tweet, and as a result, FUNNILY enough, he's managed to gain and lose me as a fan on the same day.

Ah cool, were did you post on GameCentral? Here. I'd planned to post it below that morning's Inbox anyway, but as fate would have it there was a letter published about Shenmue so I was actually handed an excuse to bring it up. The Chen style Tai Ji masters in Shenmue II - is one of them your avatar at the Dojo?

Totally warranted, I know what you mean. I was lucky enough to get a positive response in the GameCentral comments section the other day, making it a bigger source of views for the new video than Facebook or Twitter. But I've also encountered negative reactions on forums in the past and it can be a challenge not to get drawn into arguments. I try to just let the main posts speak for themselves and not repeat myself if I feel that their stock criticisms are countered by what I've already written. I remind myself that anyone else reading the thread can see that for themselves whether I fight for the last word or not. Since we're throwing around ideas, I'll spill the beans on what I was thinking about with that thread on Shenmue 500K (about how Shenmue has influenced people). Answers ranged from real martial arts training, to appreciating the details of day-to-day life, to the love of Japan and Japanese culture. And I know there's a thread (which I haven't read yet, so it may not actually amount to much) at Shenmue Dojo about trips to Japan inspired by Shenmue. So, my crazy ambition is to get the Japanese government involved. Demonstrate to them that Shenmue is their country's greatest entertainment (even artistic) export, that it's a positive advertisement for their culture and effectively promotes tourism to their islands. If we can make a strong enough case with enough evidence to back up these claims, then maybe, just maybe, if we catch the right person on the right day, they might decide to apply a little pressure (or lend a little support) to Sega to make Shenmue III a reality. Pie in the sky? Almost certainly. Worth a try? Heck, why not.

While reality is starting to set in for some, I think the HD bubble is still very much afloat for many hopeful fans. So as hard as it can be to get them onboard with the Tweetathon, it'll be even harder to make them part with cash for a charity drive when they still believe it's not necessary. I take your point about the lessening participation, but I think we can sustain the Tweetathon long enough to ride out the HD rumors and still have a reasonable foundation to build on, possibly with the fundraiser. Here's the fundraiser discussion that mue's referring to, Johnny: shenmue-uk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=shenmue3&action=display&thread=1980

Sorry if the layout's messed up in this post, Opera Mini Browser is so shit beyond words that it even fucks around with your words. And I think a collaborative video of all the fans doing crazy stuff like in Shenmue Masters video would be cool. Show more support in the video. Then we just post it to every Sega, YS NET outlet. We could also use some fan videos and segment them into this large video as well. just a thought... I agree with combining the videos, I'll give it a go some time when there are more of them to select clips from. Yeah, there could definitely be a possibility for Yu/ Sumo collabo, but there's not much use mulling it over too hard until Yu has the funding + license. I think if we can refer to this as a solution to how the game would be made without Sega's own dev team, it could win over some nay-sayers into supporting the campaign. Oh and how come you were searching the Dojo for the referrals, is that where they came from? I did post your latest vid up there, but I didn't think anybody took any notice YouTube stats show a couple of referrals coming from there, but as always it only shows the domain name rather than the specific page(s). The thing with forums is that even if no one replies in the thread, there'll still be some who watch the video and a portion of those might act on it. It's never a waste of time posting the link, so good job mue.

Apropos of nothing (damn, I've wanted to use that phrase for so long), I was just searching through Shenmue Dojo trying (unsuccessfully) to find where the referrals to my latest video were coming from, when I started reading this thread. I think people are onto something when they suggest Sumo Digital could pair up with Suzuki/YSNet to make Shenmue III, given their keenness to do it. It really does seem like the obvious route to take, if Yu ever gets the chance, and I think it quells any concerns people may have about YSNet being too small to make the game on their own. On another unrelated note, Shenmue Stare's sourced more craziness to promote the hashtag: youtu.be/QhLx3kg6wE4
