.....for shamelessly copying Gollum/Smeagel from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and calling him Chai!! Chai was last seen looking for 'the precious' in Yamanose and refused to comment to us at this time.
However, Suzuki has said he will contest the claim all the way, and that any further similarities between Fuk-San and Sam Wise is pure coincidence. It seems like Peter Jackson got HIS inspiration from a certain DC game IMHO.
Due to legal proceedings, plans for Shenmue 3 have been put on hold, despite 'money bags' Bill Gates offering a substantial fee to make it an Xbox exclusive and further dilute a great series with an orangey tang and poor box art. Rumours that it will have pics of Master Gates in the background have been unfounded.

mildy funny but Shenmue was developed for the saturn from 1995 onwards and the shenmue story written in 1994 so chai's character had already been created years before the first Lord of the rings film was released.

You have a point Pingham. BUT, the Lord of the Rings books were copyrighted years before Shenmue was made and Suzuki probably got his inspiration from the books themselves. But, I find it very cool that that is a similarity. I never would of figured that out unless I did some serious digging. Great job HellboundHeart

Thanks Pesci.
btw, there are some similarities with LOTR and Shenmue besides Chai and Gollum, though he is the most obvious. Coincidence it seems, who knows?
Both are epics and follow similar story structure, both concern the search and info about a precious item. It appears that it was foretold by prophecy, and failure may not just affect Ryo but maybe the world?
I haven't quite finished Shenmue 2 yet, but the Shenmue series is kinda the LOTR series for innovation and a classic for games like the LOTR is for films and books.

You never cease to amaze me Hellbound. That is a very interesting observation. Yes, both story's are very similar. It seems that the base of Suzuki's ideas were inspired by LotR

I would be laughing if that was where he got his inspiration from

Anyone besides me read the book? (LOTR is one complete book made seperately during the depression for financial issues) I dont really think theyre that similar seeing as Tolkien got most of his inspiration from the first world war. And theres many anti industrial themes in LoTR where shenmue is about revenge to the point, then two mirrors that no one knows much about... meh.

I've read The Hobbit, but kept falling asleep during FotR. The books just aren't as gripping as the movies, unfortunately. Regardless, that was funny

Ryo sort of has the same role as Frodo but they act completely differen'y. Frodo is a little wussy. As for the Ren-a-likes. I think you nailed it there

If you have finished Shenmue II yet you should know the ending is very mystical and that it is kind of like magic. Maybe further through Shenmue it will get even more mystical?

Hmmm, i always thought the two sounded and looked sort of alike, but whenever i play Shenmue, i think about Gollum whenever Chai comes in play. Is that true though, Yu got sued?
