Playable demo on Official PS2 Mag UK this month, issue 50. I've played it and I have to say, I'm in two minds about whether or not it'll be any good. On the one side, it looks like it could be the worst, but on the other side, it has certain parts that make it the best. It didn't go down well in JP, reviews are mixed for once, probably won't surpass Silent Hill 2, but there's lots to love about it. Best Soundtrack yet? Perhaps. The room works really well, as does FP view, but it's the structure of the game and the constantly coming back to the room that annoys I think. The voyeuristic element of the game is pure magic, looking through the keyhole and windows, and stuff like that. I love the radio in the room. Funny though, years of complaning by Resident Evil fans about those chests/trunks, and SH4 gets one finally implemented as part of game evolution, to make the game better lol www.gamesradar.comgo read the SH4 interview. I'm disappointed by the interview, by as ever, the SH4 story sounds amazing and intriguing which is the main thing I like....

I just got the game two days ago, straight on release. Initially as I was playing I thought 8/10, with some neat touches, but the more I play it I've got to say that it is excellent. I'm going to call it 'flawed genius' and give it 9/10 at the moment.
My only criticisms are:
1. The Camera (turning a corridor in 3rd person and it being a little uncontrollable and erratic).
2. The game structure, the biggest change in the series. Your apartment acts pretty much as the main hub by which you can access the other dimensions, so it's reminiscent of Mario 64. Yet with Mario 64 and it's levels, the levels were slightly less linear and more free roaming expanse, and there was much to do. Also I guess, its lack of realism compared to Silent Hill 4 made you overlook it more. You had freedom in movement. The Room in Silent Hill 4 works, but you feel there could be more innovation to it. Seeing the levels, some short and linear and then returning back to the room to save, only place to replenish energy for first half of game, to order your inventory and store items in trunk to get space for more, it makes the game 'bitty'.
3. The characters. Don't fall in love with them, because there are many and you won't be seeing them for long.
But what is 10/10 about the game....
1. The sound. Scariest game I've played for sound, hearing screams and inhuman grunts and running machinery. The actual music by Akira is also some of the best he's done so far, the album is a winner.
2. The story. It WILL keep you engrossed, to continue playing to the end and the final reveal. The story encapsulates themes of claustrophobia, death, spiritual reawakening and sexual voyeurism to name but a few.
3. The room (only controlled in first person view) is truly stunning and the way the game makes you alternate between solving puzzles in the room before going back to the dimension is excellent. There are some awesome scary touches, messages written in blood, threats on your neighbour and the fact that you can't leave your apartment at all to save them (you've had nightmares for days and upon waking your front door has been locked with heavy chains and padlocks from the INSIDE, and all windows and stuff won't open. You can't be heard, even when people knock on your door and you can see them through your peephole and you're shouting for them).
If you've got patience, give the game a try. I love it already although Silent Hill 2 remains my favourite still for the story and the way it was played out. But Silent Hill 4 at this rate, could very well slot into second spot and replace Silent Hill 1 for me.
Half the game to go....

Yes, I like the demo and my only criticism is the fighting. If I got the game though I am sure I would get used to it
