By David Smith 08/02/2004 Because rumors of another Shenmue game will only fade with the eventual heat death of the universe, an upcoming online game demonstration in China has revived hopes for a third title in Sega's expansive adventure series. Tomorrow, August 3, Sega plans to hold a press conference in Shanghai to announce more details regarding its plans for expansion in the Chinese market. Establishing a presence in China has become a priority for many Japanese games publishers, due to the continuing decline of their home market -- Nintendo, Sony, Square Enix, and others Some Chinese sources claim that the centerpiece of the event will be an online Shenmue title for the PC, alongside other Sega online games such as Phantasy Star Online and The Matrix Online. The theory is bolstered somewhat by the stated mission of Yu Suzuki's new Digitalrex studio -- the creation of "cinematic online games" -- and Shenmue's themes and setting might also prove a good fit for the Chinese market. However, the likelihood of a streamlined post-merger Sega agreeing to fund another of Yu Suzuki's massive projects remains extremely low, so we'll believe this one when we see more concrete details.
