As this is a UK-centric forum, I wondered if everyone's aware of the troubles currently facing GAME Group, which owns the GAME and Gamestation chains of high street stores. www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/892825-game-admits-end-may-be-near-as-reports-say-company-is-up-for-saleThere are lots of bargains to be had right now, as they desperately try to rake in some cash to save the company over the next two weeks. Virtually everything is reduced, to some quite surprising levels, thus shelves are emptying pretty quickly. No Shenmue though...

Yep ive been following the situation over on SSUK forums
its because they had a bad Xmas trading period, and got a reduced loan capacity from RBS to pay for new stock and releases. So EA and Capcom dropped them, which has fucked them up further. They are now looking for a buyer apparently?
Anyway ive got day off work so im gonna check out my nearest Gamestation today

American company GameStop was the main rumour to buy them out, but now the Financial Times is pointing at the company that owns Comet.

This reminds me, I've got like £12 on my GAME reward card. Shit, I need to use it quick then, I hope they still have something decent in stock.

I went to GAME today, Chichester branch, wierd as it used to be branded a GAMESTATION until a few weeks ago, silly them wasting money re-branding for no apparent reason
anyway they have a sale on called the "Spring clearout" , but looking at the Wii games, all the good stuff seems to have gone (all the Wii second hand stock was crappy shovelware) , The XB360 pre owned section still had good games, but no £2 games like people were reporting over on SSUK. Still i picked up the new version of Fallout New Vegas (brand new 24.99) and 3 pre owned games, Modern warfare 2 & 3 (£8, £23) and Medal of Honor (£5) all marked down between £5-10 of their original price so worth picking up.

If you don't have a Wii then I'd say it's well worth taking advantage of a price like that, especially considering there's less risk of hardware faults like you might get with a pre-owned 360 or even PS3. I know the Wii has a reputation for having few must-have titles, but those it has really are must-haves.

A Wii for forty beans!! I was with a hot beanie last night, but how would I gather 40 beans and then convince them to become the property of GAME(who I assume is turning their hand to the pimp GAME due to the current state of affairs)?

When I looked at their trade-in prices one time I felt like I'd been pimp slapped.

To be honest i could see this coming, the GAME branches have been dire places for years, if they are to survive they needed a kick up the ass to improve themselves
GameStation was awesome before GAME took them over, and even after the takeover are still better stores than GAME, so its criminal that the poor old Gamestation stores should suffer in order to save GAME
I remember back in the good old days (pre 2003) EB & Gamestation were my 2 favourite shops, i'd never even visited a GAME store until they merged with EB and re-branded everything

Part of their problem is the overabundance of stores. The town where I work has a Gamestation and two GAMEs all within walking distance of each other. They'd serve the same number of customers with just one of these stores, two at the most, so they're wasting good money on expensive shop rental and extra staff they don't need. The town where I went to uni was the same, and it is elsewhere from what I hear. That's a lack of basic business management.

Some interesting maneuverings by other retailers in response to GAME's troubles: Tesco/ShopTo/Blockbuster(Does the forum have a word filter on T-E-S-C-O?)

Update on GAME, taken from Metro
looks like the remaining stores will be saved by RBS or Comets owners
and sweaty, i dident think the forum had a ban on the word "Tesco" lol

It seems to have worked okay for you, but kept inserting a space for me! The latest on GAME is that all 333 remaining stores have been sold to OpCapita (the company that owns Comet), according to BBC News.

Hopefully now they have halfed their number of stores (they did have waaaay too many in the same towns, stemming from the days of EB, GAME & Gamestation being seperate chains i guess) they will be able to do well, they are not my fav store, but its nice to have at least 1 exclusive video game retailer on the high street!
