I love being a liberal, I am open and accepting of everyone. I strongly believe in equality and believe everyone has the same rights. I would stand up for what I believed in if I ever did have to.

From my understanding, left is liberal, meaning open to change, but still open to socialist ideologies. Libertarian is someone who is radically open to change, and will do sometimes radical things to achieve such change. They want absolute freedom of law and government rule. Authoritarian I would thing they rule with an iron fist and believe control of a state should be limited to very few, most of the time a select one. Someone who agrees with dictatorships I would imagine to be Authoritarian. Someone who wants to abolish liberties for everyone and make them very defined. The right is conservative, abiding by history and in favor of making laws early and following those to the T as long as a country stands. They do not want much change, and usually yell at you if you disagree with them. Expand on this, beedle. Liberal=modern wants change conservative=old-fashioned, doesn't. These terms crop up in science and shit too, like when it comes to new theories. Those who support the new theory are called liberal, whereas those who don't would be conservative (hence; conserve). So basically conservatives are not necessarily left or right by definition, it has no ideology, they're just the more right wing at the moment because that's how fings was. Vice versa for liberals, they're more open minded. Authoritarian, yeah. Clue's in the name. The state owns you, restricts you. Controls your life. Similar to totalitarianism. Libertarians are basically the opposite - they want the government to have little or no influence on stuff. Kinda like anarchists. Politics is fun!

It is sad how interest groups control everything though... Us being involved is merely sharing opinions with one another. The only way to convince a politician, a successful politician anyway, is with money.

Sadly Joe is right, people start out with good intentions but once money is entered in to the equation people turn in to monsters.
I think the only hope of change in the UK is if people actually vote for the Liberal Democrats, both Labour and Tories have awful track records and I think is time England gave the Libs a chance. Give them 4 years to see if they can make a difference. I believe they can, I believe the Liberals will reform this country. Sadly though, people don't realise that the Liberal Democrat's want to change UK laws so people can live better and freer. They will change the tax bands and give relief to low income earners. They also plan to abolish University Fees, they also want a reform on everything that has failed to work in the country.
I hope people will wake up before next May and vote Liberal Democrats!

I'd like to vote lib dem, but I'm not old enough. If the lib dems were in power, however, I would be able to, since they want to bring the voting age to 16. And yeah, we need no uni fees, much like, I dunno, Scotland? University education should be on top priority, students are the future of the country, the more you invest in them, the better off we'll be. They also support Proportional Representation, which is sexy and modern (and European?).
Unfortunately, people in this country are idiots who decide to vote for two nearly identical parties. How fucking democratic, let's vote for two conservative parties. New Labour are not left wing. They are just a little less right wing than the Tories. With added incompetence. That said, they are the lesser of two evils (see; Thatcher).

Kind of our equivalent of the Republicans and Democrats. Except not as right wing.

I guess I'll this out there, but isn't categorising someone left or right wing a bit overly simplistic? It doesn't seem to account for people who are left for some issues, but more right for another. Or, someone who in an ideal world would be one but being more realistic another. I'd assume there's a pretty high percentage fall in those areas.

I am left wing about all issues that I believe in.
This is what I don't understand about Labour and Tories, they are both the same. You can tell they are, the only big difference is that Gordon Brown is a huge suck up who likes taking money from Libya!
And as for Thatcher, what a bitch (understatement).

Even so, most people would describe themselves in different degrees, i.e. "moderately right wing", "extreme left", etc.

True, but I'll use Steve as an example of the point I was making. You're not really left wing about everything. While it was a while ago, your views on the environment would probably be seen as more right wing than left. It's not something really worth debating though, just a thought I typed out loud so to speak.

In America, we have word for the people who share ideologies of both major parties: Independents.
And are the Tories the dems?

Tories=conservatives, mate. Although they're on the same position as the democrats on that compass site, which is amusing.
