www.oxm.co.uk/41286/put-shenmue-3-on-kickstarter-sega-all-stars-dev/The Sega All-Stars developers have got the right idea, Suzuki should try it, though as Sweaty has previously pointed out before the Money is only one factor, Suzuki also needs the License, which is why Team Yu is so important! Still great to see the media talking about Shenmue 3 eh? maybe Team Yu and the tweetathon is helping!

One reason why Yu Suzuki doesn't do it is obvious, it's because Sega has the license and they will never and should never be involved in a kick starter project. So yeah, Yu would need the license. It would also depend on what Yu's ambitions were as well, as I can't imagine kickstarter being able to fund anything but relatively humble projects. There also might be cultural considerations, as I don't know how the Japnanese (especially a traditional Japanese developer like Suzuki) view the idea.

indeed as long as Sega has the License it wont happen, because they would never allow themselves of the embarrassment of a fan funded title!
can you remind me how much Kickstarter made for that other project which was hugely successful?

wasn't it like 2 or 3 million or something. Not bad at all, considering what the expectations were.

indeed as long as Sega has the License it wont happen, because they would never allow themselves of the embarrassment of a fan funded title! They probably wouldnt even get the funds needed in the first place. Even more embarrassing to try it and fail. I wonder what happens with Kickstarter projects that fail mid development? People get refunded if they dont raise their goal, but what if the goal is reached but for whatever reason the product is never completed? The money is likely mostly spent then. I dunno... a project the size of Shenmue just seems too big for the likes of Kickstarter whatever the circumstance.
