Holy shit how do you still have access to this game? I need to play Shenmue again but it seems like it's so out of my reach.

Have the games aged badly in anyway?

Not really. The story telling adventure game genre has sort of gone big over the last few years with LA Noire and Heavy Rain, but neither feel as deep and detailed as Shenmue.
Some of the production values are better obviously, but they are sort of shallow compared to the depth of Shenmue.
The Godfather of QTEs, less linearity in gameplay, pretty decent fighting mechanics. Nothing feels particularly clunky in either Shenmue game outside of the slightly dodgy walking controls.

The graphics in Shenmue 1 actually hold up better IMO than S2
in S2 because its so big, it seems less detailed in places and there are some rough textures here and there. Also because there are so many people, the unimportant characters are more blocky and less detailed
Shenmue 1 still looks like a work of art to me. They obviously spent so much time perfecting it to be the DC's swansong. S2 was probably rushed out the door due to the impending death of the DC
As Chris said the QTE's are still amazing, better than the ones in games that have tried to copy like RE5. The fighting system is still great. Just running around is clunky when your used to games like GTAIV, Fable or RE5.

Nothing feels particularly clunky in either Shenmue game outside of the slightly dodgy walking controls. I agree with this. The games have aged very well. Every new adventure game that I play ultimately seem so shallow in terms of detail and scope when compared to Shenmue. Shenmue was just such an ambitious title, it seems no other game has even tried to really accomplish the same thing. That's the blessing and cure of Shenmue, as I found that when I would compare a game like LA Noire to Shenmue, I just end up wishing I was playing Shenmue instead. Thats's not to say its a 'better game' as in many ways it's not, it's often clunky, ridiculously rigid (a cutscene just to drink a can of Soda. Seriously?) and could only actualize on a limited amount of it's ambition (how many uses for FREE, where there really?). But what it did achieve, left a lasting memory with me and affected me more than any other videogame has. @ pat Shenmue 2 rushed? I completely disagree with you there. The graphics may in some ways not be as sharp due it's increased scale, but what it does gain from the scale is more than worth the tradeoff. China is completely unlike the small town of doubita in nearly every way, and thus you don't feel like your playing the same game in some ways, but it does feel like possibly the most ambitious and well actualized sequel to an adventure game I have ever played. The attention to the detail of Chinese culture is phenomenal. But most importantly the cast of characters Ryo meets out there are more intriguing and lively than anything in Doubita, and the story becomes more interesting. At first I felt genuinely uneasy without a proper home with Ine-san waiting for me to go home to, and that's when I started to realize just how good a move it was.

Shenmue II isn't rushed. There are some rougher textures and a lower poly count in places because of the scope and number of maps, but it's actually got a lot of improvement in it compared to the first game.
For instance, being able to knock over objects during fights, the save anywhere and keep playing system, the HUD got a nice revamp, there is a more open and varied monetary system, etc.
I would love for Yu Suzuki to get the chance to make a game like this again, because he and AM2 did so much revolutionary stuff around a decade ago and very little of the game feels stale even after so much time has passed.

Yeah, except they could have explained that you can now save anywhere. I played through the whole of the game without ever knowing you could do this. I remember the night I completed it: I had been playing for a couple of hours and than got to that massive 100 (or how ever many) floor building. However I obviously didn't know it was going to be so huge and thus started it, I was really crap at that section so it took me flipping ages to finish it and beat the fat guy. It's now 3 in the morning, I'm knackered and all I want to do is get back to Rens hideout and save......except I didn't get the bloody chance! I was whisked off to the last disk of the game where there are no more hideouts at all! So I finally completed it at like 5 in the morning, simultaneously gob-smacked by the ending and enraged that AM2 didn't include more save points.....
Completely agree with your post though, Chris. The doesn't feel like it's age. Yu definitely deserves another crack with current gen consoles, Kojima was allowed to indulge in the disgustingly decadent and bloated experience that is MGS4, but Yu never got his chance (yet).

MGS4's story was basically born out of fucking stupid fans not understanding part of MGS2's ending was to figure it out yourself and fill in the blanks/believe what you want to believe (aka possibly the main theme of the game).
Yu Suzuki knows where he's going with Shenmue, he's got the themes figured out, and even let slip in an interview how Ryo finally lets go and no longer desires revenge by the end of the saga (which isn't to say he doesn't fuck Lan Di's shit up for other reasons).
Although any Shenmue sequel needs far better translation and voice acting, holy shit. The old translation and voices are a novelty at best these days.

Definitely. One of the things I always loved about Shenmue is how well it was all planned out. The way Ryo has dreams of Shenhua all through Shenmue, yet we have not a clue who she is until the end of the second game. Same thing with calling the franchise Shenmue. What other game has done stuff like that?

The game really does feel fully fleshed out. It is an excellent integration of culture, gameplay mechanics, story, and characters. It never gets old because you're always doing something new, fresh, and exciting. It is the greatest game of all time, and I look at it that way from the most objective standpoint I can.
